Steve Kurza

Instructor

Steven Kurza began his career in emergency services by joining Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department in 2011, obtaining his Firefighter One Certification that same year. Shortly thereafter, he volunteered with Glenwood Pochuck Volunteer Ambulance Corps as a first responder. In February 2012, Steven enlisted in the New Jersey Army National Guard as an Infantryman. He graduated United States Army One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA in November 2012. He was then assigned to a heavy weapons infantry company, D Co. 2-113 INF, out of Jersey City. Steven  obtained his New Jersey State EMT License in January 2014. 

Select Soldiers from Steven’s unit were activated and assigned to Alpha Co. 2-113 INF in August of 2014. These soldiers then departed to Fort Bliss, TX for pre-deployment training. While there, Soldiers became proficient in Improvised Explosive Device identification, basic infantry squad movements, and reaction to contact, amongst other drills. The infantry company then departed to Isa Air Base, Bahrain. While there, the company provided base security by manning vehicle and personnel checkpoints, static posts, and a quick reaction force.

In the fall of 2016, Steven was hired as a Correctional Officer for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. While employed, he was tasked with regular searches for contraband, perimeter security, and maintaining the peace in housing units averaging 90-100 inmates per officer. 

In December 2017, Steven was hired as a Police Officer for Parsippany Troy Hills Police Department. While employed, some of the certifications he has received include  Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, High Risk Motor Vehicle Stops and Building Clearing, and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care. Steven is also assigned to the department’s Rifle Team.

In 2021, Steven obtained his certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Shortly thereafter, he completed the selection process to become a Medical Specialist with the Morris County Special Operations Group (SOG) which serves as the emergency medical component of the Morris County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) tasked to care for downed police officers assigned to the tactical team. SERT and SOG are primarily tasked with the execution of high-risk search warrants, handling of barricaded subjects, active shooter response and any other law enforcement function that requires specialized tactics, equipment and training.

Steven has received training in K-9 Medical Operations, Low light / No light Medical Operations, and Awareness Level Rescue Operations. He is currently an American Heart Certified BLS Instructor, as well as a Tactical Emergency Casualty Care Instructor through NAEMT. Consistent training is a key component in Steven’s professional and personal life. He regularly seeks further professional development and can often be found at the shooting range to maintain peak firearms proficiency.
